Intracytoplasmic Sperm injection (ICSI) is an advanced procedure of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) that can help address major male fertility factors and certain female fertility issues
The Procedure of ICSI/IMSI:
· ICSI reproduction begins after the retrieval of the egg and sperm from the couple.
· The egg is then placed in a petri dish and held with the help of a pipette.
· The process of injecting sperm into egg is performed with the help of a sharp hollow needle. The needle pierces into the hard shell of the egg to accomplish the fertilization procedure.
IMSI, also called “Super ICSI” requires a high-resolution microscope that magnifies the sperm 6,300 times. The sperms with proper morphological features such as shape, size, and motility are selected with the help of such a high power magnifying tool for the ICSI or IVF procedures. The embryos developed as a result of IMSI/ICSI fertilization, are transferred into a woman’s uterus for implantation and commencement of pregnancy.
Advantages of ICSI/IMSI:
· One of the major advantages of ICSI conception is that good-quality embryos can be produced and selected, avoiding the possibility of multiple pregnancies.
· Preimplantation genetic diagnosis/screening (PGD/PGS) of the embryos requires the use of ICSI/IMSI that can enable efficient embryo screening.
